How to fix a hole in my wall?

I punched a hole in the wall a little while ago, and I've researched online on how to fix it. I suppose my real question is should I cut out a square and replace is with new drywall, or can I just use mesh tape and spackle since it's only a hole as big as my fist? Any help would be great.
